Louis-Joseph de Montcalm was the French general who defended New France against British invasion with skill and determination despite being undermined by the corrupt colonial administration. He won impressive victories at Fort William Henry and Ticonderoga before facing Wolfe at Quebec.
He was mortally wounded at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and reportedly said upon learning the wound was fatal: 'So much the better—I shall not see the surrender of Quebec.' He died the next morning. Both he and Wolfe died in the same battle—one of history's most remarkable coincidences.
