Gustavus Adolphus was the King of Sweden who transformed European warfare and saved the Protestant cause from destruction during the Thirty Years' War. He created the first truly modern army—combining mobile artillery, disciplined infantry, and aggressive cavalry into a combined-arms doctrine that swept aside every opponent.
He was both a brilliant administrator who turned Sweden into a great power and a hands-on battlefield commander who led charges personally. He was killed at the Battle of Lützen in 1632 while leading a cavalry charge through fog—his death was Sweden's greatest military loss, but his reforms had already changed warfare permanently.
