Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher was the Prussian field marshal whose stubborn determination saved Europe at Waterloo. He was 73 years old, had been thrown from his horse and trampled by cavalry at Ligny just three days earlier, and still marched his army to Wellington's aid at the critical moment.
He was the opposite of Wellington's careful method—Blücher was aggressive, impetuous, and charged forward at every opportunity. His constant battle cry was 'Vorwärts!' (Forward!). Without his stubborn march through mud and rain to reach Waterloo, Napoleon might have won. He reportedly said upon seeing London for the first time: 'What a beautiful city to plunder!'
