Flavius Stilicho
~359–408 · Roman (Western Empire, of Vandal descent) · Fall of the Western Roman Empire
Known for: Last great general of the Western Roman Empire who defended it against Alaric and barbarian invasions
Stilicho was the last competent defender of the Western Roman Empire—a half-Vandal general who devoted his life to defending a Rome that ultimately executed him for treason. He defeated Alaric's Visigoths twice and repelled a massive barbarian invasion at Fiesole with skill and determination.
He was the most powerful man in the West as guardian of the young Emperor Honorius, which made him the target of court intrigue. He was accused of treason and executed without resistance—he ordered his guards to stand down. Two years after his death, Rome fell to Alaric.
