Rommel was the most famous German general of WWII—commander of the Afrika Korps who earned the respect of his British enemies through tactical brilliance and adherence to the rules of war (he refused to execute captured commandos and Jewish soldiers despite Hitler's orders).
He was implicated in the July 20 plot to assassinate Hitler and given a choice: suicide (with a state funeral and protection for his family) or trial (with execution and family punishment). He chose the poison. He was 52.
