Epaminondas

Known for: Shattered Spartan military dominance with the revolutionary oblique order at the Battle of Leuctra

Epaminondas was the Theban general who accomplished the impossible: he destroyed Spartan military supremacy, which had been unchallenged for centuries. At the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BCE, he invented the oblique order—concentrating overwhelming force on one wing while refusing the other—a tactical innovation later used by Philip II, Alexander, Frederick the Great, and Napoleon.

He was also a liberator who freed the Messenian helots from centuries of Spartan slavery, founding the city of Messene as a permanent check on Spartan power. He died at the Battle of Mantinea, pulling the spear from his own body only after learning his side had won. His dying words: 'I leave behind me two immortal daughters—Leuctra and Mantinea.'
