Crazy Horse was an Oglala Lakota war leader who was quiet, mystical, and the finest cavalry tactician on the American plains. He defeated Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876—the most celebrated victory of any indigenous force against a colonial army in North American history.
He refused to be photographed—no confirmed photograph exists. He had a vision that he would be invincible in battle as long as he threw dust over himself beforehand. He surrendered in 1877 to protect his starving people and was bayoneted to death at Fort Robinson, reportedly while resisting imprisonment.
