Cao Cao was the most powerful warlord of the Three Kingdoms period, unifying northern China through a combination of military genius, political cunning, and ruthless pragmatism. He was the great antagonist of Romance of the Three Kingdoms—though historically he was far more nuanced than the villain of the novel.
He was also a genuine poet whose works are among the finest of the Han period, and a patron of talent who promoted people based on ability rather than birth. His famous motto—'I would rather betray the world than let the world betray me'—captures his philosophy. He laid the foundation for the Wei kingdom and ultimately the Jin Dynasty's reunification of China.
