Belisarius was the greatest general of late antiquity—he conquered the Vandal kingdom of North Africa with 15,000 men, reconquered Italy from the Ostrogoths, and defended Constantinople against a Persian invasion. He did all this with armies far too small for the job because Justinian was cheap and paranoid.

Despite his loyalty, Justinian stripped him of command multiple times due to jealousy. The legend that Belisarius was blinded and reduced to begging ('Give a penny to Belisarius!') is probably fiction, but it captures the tragedy of a great man betrayed by an ungrateful emperor.
