Arminius was a Germanic chieftain raised as a Roman hostage who became a Roman citizen and military officer—then turned against Rome in the most devastating ambush in Roman history. At the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE, he lured Varus's three legions into a forest ambush and annihilated them, killing approximately 20,000 Roman soldiers.
Augustus reportedly spent months banging his head against walls, crying 'Varus, give me back my legions!' The battle permanently halted Roman expansion east of the Rhine, creating the cultural divide between Latin and Germanic Europe that persists to this day. Arminius was later killed by his own relatives who feared his growing power.
