Andrea Doria was the most feared admiral in the Mediterranean during the age of galley warfare—and he remained active in command into his eighties, which was extraordinary for any era. He served multiple masters—France, the Papacy, the Habsburgs—always advancing Genoese interests above all else.
He liberated his home city of Genoa from French control and established a republican constitution that lasted until Napoleon. He fought the Ottoman navy across the Mediterranean and was the most powerful figure in Genoese politics for decades.
