Ahmad Shah Durrani was the founder of modern Afghanistan and one of the most successful military commanders of the 18th century. He unified the Afghan tribes and built an empire stretching from eastern Persia to northern India. His victory at the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761 was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the century.
He was charismatic and ruled through consensus rather than pure autocracy, earning the title 'Ahmad Shah Baba' (Father). He suffered from a facial cancer that eventually killed him, yet continued campaigning through his illness.
