Zheng He

Zheng He was a Muslim eunuch captured as a boy during the Ming conquest of Yunnan, who rose to become the most powerful admiral in Chinese history. His treasure fleet was enormous—hundreds of ships, some reportedly 400 feet long, carrying 27,000 men. He established trade networks and projected Chinese power across the Indian Ocean.
He was diplomatic rather than conquering, distributing gifts and establishing tributary relationships. He brought exotic goods back to the Ming court, including giraffes interpreted as the mythical qilin. After his death, the Ming turned isolationist and destroyed the fleet and most records—one of history's great 'what ifs.'
