Thesiger was born in the British Legation in Addis Ababa and spent his life rejecting Western civilization. He crossed the Empty Quarter—the world's largest sand desert—twice on camelback with Bedouin companions, traveling on starvation rations through territory that had defeated previous expeditions.
He was aristocratic, ascetic, and completely committed to the Bedouin way of life. He hated modernity and mourned the destruction of traditional societies by oil wealth. He spent his later years among the Marsh Arabs of Iraq and pastoral peoples of Kenya.
