Vivian Fuchs
1908–1999 · British (Isle of Wight) · Modern Era
Known for: Led the first overland crossing of Antarctica in 1958—completing the journey Shackleton dreamed of 44 years earlier
Fuchs led the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, using modified Sno-Cats to cross Antarctica in 99 days. Edmund Hillary led the support team from the other side and controversially raced ahead to the Pole, arriving before Fuchs.
Fuchs was methodical, steady, and unflappable—the opposite of Shackleton's dramatic style. He completed the first land crossing of Antarctica, fulfilling Shackleton's dream. He was knighted and continued Antarctic research for decades.
