Uemura was a quiet, determined adventurer who achieved an extraordinary string of firsts: first to summit the highest peak on five continents, first to reach the North Pole solo by dogsled, first to solo raft the Amazon, and first to solo climb Denali in winter.
He was modest, meticulous in planning, and physically small but enormously tough. He disappeared on Denali in February 1984 after a successful winter summit—his body was never found. Japan awarded him the National Honor Award posthumously.
