Lewis was Thomas Jefferson's personal secretary and protégé, chosen to lead the expedition across the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific. He was brilliant, scientifically trained, and deeply curious—documenting 300 species unknown to Western science during the 28-month, 8,000-mile journey.
After the expedition's triumphant return, Lewis struggled with depression, alcoholism, and political difficulties as Governor of Louisiana Territory. He died at age 35 under mysterious circumstances at a Tennessee inn—most historians believe it was suicide, though murder theories persist.
