Bruce was a tall, red-haired Scottish laird who traveled through Ethiopia and reached the source of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana in 1770. He lived at the Ethiopian court, witnessed civil wars, and barely escaped with his life.
His five-volume Travels described wonders that London society refused to believe—eating raw meat, Ethiopian warfare, extraordinary wildlife. He was proud, hot-tempered, and deeply wounded by the public's skepticism.
