Eberhardt was a Swiss-Russian anarchist who moved to Algeria at 20, converted to Islam, dressed as an Arab man (taking the name Si Mahmoud Saadi), and wandered the Sahara on horseback. She drank, smoked kif, and had affairs with both men and women.
She was stabbed by a religious fanatic (she survived), wrote lyrical dispatches from the desert, and drowned in a flash flood at 27. Her manuscripts were found in the mud. She was one of the most radical nonconformists of the Belle Époque—a life that burned bright and short.
