Herodotus
~484–~425 BCE · Greek (Halicarnassus) · Classical Greece
Known for: Father of History—traveled the ancient world and invented both historical writing and travel literature simultaneously
Herodotus traveled more widely than almost anyone in the ancient world—visiting Egypt, Babylon, Scythia, and North Africa. His Histories is the first systematic attempt to record and explain historical events, specifically the Greco-Persian Wars.
He was curious, open-minded, and willing to record fantastic stories that earned him the nickname 'Father of Lies' from critics. He was genuinely interested in foreign cultures and tried to understand rather than judge them—revolutionary for his era.
