Henry Morton Stanley

Stanley was born John Rowlands, an illegitimate workhouse child who reinvented himself in America. Sent by the New York Herald to find Livingstone, he produced the most famous greeting in exploration history: 'Dr. Livingstone, I presume?' His Congo expedition was brutal—he lost two-thirds of his men.
He later served King Leopold II, helping establish the Congo Free State—one of history's most horrific colonial enterprises that killed millions. He was knighted despite his controversial record. He was the epitome of Victorian exploration: spectacular achievement built on spectacular suffering.
