Hanno was a Carthaginian magistrate who led a massive colonizing expedition down the African coast with 30,000 settlers. His account describes founding cities, seeing volcanic eruptions, and encountering 'gorillas'—possibly the actual animals, giving us the word.
The exact extent of his voyage is debated—he may have reached the Gulf of Guinea. His account survives as a Greek translation of a Carthaginian temple inscription. It's one of the most remarkable exploration documents from antiquity.
