Magellan was a Portuguese nobleman who defected to Spain after being denied support by the Portuguese king. His fleet of five ships and 270 men sailed through the strait at South America's tip, then crossed the Pacific—a journey so vast that the crew nearly starved, eating sawdust and leather.

Magellan was killed in a battle on Mactan Island in the Philippines after picking a fight with a local chief. Only one ship, the Victoria, and 18 men completed the circumnavigation under Juan Sebastián Elcano. Magellan was stubborn, authoritarian, and willing to execute mutineers—but his navigational courage was extraordinary.
