David Livingstone

Livingstone was a cotton mill worker at age 10 who educated himself, trained as a doctor, and devoted his life to African exploration and the abolition of the slave trade. He was the first European to see Victoria Falls—'Mosi-oa-Tunya' (The Smoke That Thunders)—which he named after Queen Victoria.
He searched obsessively for the source of the Nile, lost contact with the outside world for years, and was 'found' by journalist Henry Morton Stanley in 1871. He was deeply compassionate toward Africans and fiercely anti-slavery. He died kneeling in prayer in a village in modern-day Zambia.
