Darwin joined the Beagle as an unpaid gentleman naturalist at age 22, exploring South America, the Galápagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia. He collected thousands of specimens and made observations that would revolutionize biology.

He was seasick throughout the voyage but endlessly curious on land. The Beagle voyage transformed him from a directionless Cambridge graduate into the most important biologist in history. He was gentle, modest, and suffered from chronic illness possibly contracted in South America.
