Dias sailed south along the African coast in 1488 and was blown past the cape by a violent storm. When he turned north, he found himself on the eastern coast of Africa—proof that the Indian Ocean could be reached by sea. His crew forced him to turn back, but the achievement was epochal.

He named the promontory the 'Cape of Storms,' but King João II renamed it the 'Cape of Good Hope' to encourage future voyages. Dias accompanied Vasco da Gama's fleet partway in 1497 and later drowned in a storm near the very cape he had discovered while sailing with Cabral's fleet. The sea took back what it had given him.
