Vespucci was a Florentine merchant and navigator who made several voyages to the Americas. His key insight was recognizing that the landmass Columbus reached was not part of Asia but a previously unknown continent—a paradigm-shifting realization that Columbus himself never accepted.
His letters describing the voyages were widely published across Europe. The German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller named the new continent 'America' on his 1507 map based on Vespucci's writings. Two continents bear his name—the most lasting geographical legacy of any explorer. He served as Spain's chief navigator and trained other navigators.
