Known for: First European to reach New Zealand, Tasmania, Tonga, and Fiji—proved Australia was not connected to Antarctica
Tasman sailed for the Dutch East India Company on two major voyages, discovering Tasmania (which he named Van Diemen's Land), New Zealand (where four of his crew were killed by Māori), Tonga, and Fiji. He circumnavigated Australia without actually sighting it, proving it was an island continent.
Despite these remarkable discoveries, the VOC was disappointed—he had found no profitable trade opportunities. He returned to his merchant career and died relatively unknown. His navigational achievement was enormous but commercially unrewarded. The ultimate corporate employee who delivered results his bosses didn't want.
