Prince
1958-2016 · American (Minneapolis) · Funk / Rock / Pop
Known for: Genre-defying genius who played 27 instruments, owned Purple Rain, and changed his name to a symbol
Prince played every instrument on his albums, recorded obsessively (his vault contained thousands of unreleased songs), and maintained total artistic control. He fought Warner Bros over his masters, writing 'Slave' on his face.
He was 5'2", flamboyant in performance but privately a devout Jehovah's Witness. His guitar solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the Hall of Fame is legendary. He died of an accidental fentanyl overdose.
