Pablo Picasso
1881-1973 · Spanish (Malaga; worked in Paris) · Cubism / Modern Art
Known for: Co-inventor of Cubism, painter of Guernica, and the most prolific artist of the 20th century
Picasso created over 50,000 works, reinventing himself through Blue Period, Cubism, Neoclassicism, and Surrealism. Guernica became the most powerful anti-war painting of the modern era. His Demoiselles d'Avignon shattered Western pictorial conventions.
He was a force of nature - domineering, charismatic, sexually voracious, and compulsively productive. He could be brutal to lovers and friends, viewing relationships as fuel for art. He lived to 91, working until the end.
