Oi lived in her father Hokusai's shadow and likely painted significant portions of his later works. She was described as unkempt, sharp-tongued, and uninterested in domestic life - she divorced her husband and returned to paint with her father.
Her specialty was the interplay of light and shadow, especially candlelit scenes showing remarkable Western influence. She disappeared from records after Hokusai's death. Modern scholarship is reshaping understanding of her contributions.
