Brahms grew up in poverty, playing piano in Hamburg dockside brothels as a teenager. Schumann proclaimed him a genius, creating expectations that paralyzed him - he was 43 before completing his First Symphony (called 'Beethoven's Tenth').
He was gruff, socially awkward, and famous for cutting remarks. He was in love with Clara Schumann for decades but likely never consummated the relationship. He lived simply, gave generously, and collected tin soldiers.
