O'Keeffe created monumental close-ups of flowers, bleached bones, and New Mexico landscapes that redefined American art. She fiercely resisted the sexual interpretations Freudian critics imposed on her flower paintings.
She married photographer Alfred Stieglitz, who promoted her career but also controlled her image. After his death, she retreated to New Mexico permanently, working past 90 even after losing her eyesight. She lived to 98.
