Delacroix was possibly the illegitimate son of Talleyrand and definitely the leader of French Romanticism. His Liberty Leading the People became the image of revolution itself. He clashed with Ingres over color vs. line and kept journals of extraordinary insight.

He traveled to North Africa, which transformed his palette. He was friends with Chopin and George Sand, never married, and worked relentlessly despite chronic illness.
