Degas was the Impressionist who hated being called an Impressionist. He preferred 'Realist' and insisted his radical compositions were careful calculation, not spontaneous impression. His dancers, racehorses, and women bathing are captured with meticulous precision.

Born into a wealthy banking family, he lost his fortune bailing out a brother. His eyesight deteriorated, pushing him toward sculpture and bold pastels. He was a brilliant draftsman whose radical cropping influenced modern photography.
