Durer was the supreme artist of the Northern Renaissance - a printmaker of unmatched skill and an intellectual who bridged Northern European and Italian traditions. His engravings Melencolia I and Knight, Death and the Devil are among the most complex images in Western art.
He traveled to Italy twice, wrote treatises on geometry and proportion, and fiercely protected his copyrights - making him perhaps the first artist to fight for intellectual property rights. His self-portraits present the artist as a godlike figure, a radical claim for his era.
